This was the worst firefighter loss in the departments history. The following pictures are from the collection of Fire Commissioner William C. Celentano Jr.

Horror-filled moments were to come in the early morning hours of unlucky April 13, 1910 – the fire in the chair shop at the New Haven Jail, a blaze that melted the bars in the jail and brought death to six firemen and injury to dozens others, fire crews rushed to the aid of the trapped firefighters to no avail, playing their hoselines on their comrades trapped behind the very bars meant to keep prisoners in. Killed were: Captain Charles E. Chapman, Lieutenant William J. Doherty and Firemen James Cullen, Thomas J. McGrath, James Mortell and John Buckley.
